While much of America has moved to a more progressive state in recent years, in New York City, refrigerators are still a fixture under the noses of the city as well as the federal government, so it makes sense that cities in New York City would be thrilled to have them. A 2013 study found that 80 percent of the city’s refrigerators don’t have a vent that can be closed to reduce air pollution, resulting in a 25 percent reduced air quality in New York City. “New York City is at the forefront of air quality initiatives and innovative solutions to address the challenges and concerns,” said Daniel S. Tostor, assistant professor of health policy and environmental policy at New York University and co-author of the research, published online April 22 in Environmental Health Perspectives.
